Cover Stories

From our parents we learn how to use forks and knives, but we ask books the darker questions we have. They are abrasive friends, friends that kick and scratch and bite and force us to think past what we expected and wished for. We also realize that every story leaves a multitude of stories untold. Whatever happened to the ferryman in the Brothers' Grimm "The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs"? What happened to Red Schuhart after finding the Golden Sphere? What did the woman in the dunes think about Niki Jumpei that first evening down in her house? How would Lady Brett Ashley have written about the fiesta?

The narrative web every reader and writer navigates is vast, and every new work attaches itself to an array of predecessors. The sixteen stories collected in this anthology demonstrate that originality springs from listening closely to previous generations of authors.
Some of the best contemporary writers take classic tales as their points of departure, to venture into completely new territory and arrive at unforeseen destinations. The methods, treatments, and styles differ greatly. Every story is distinct.
Cover Stories invites readers to reconnect with old favorites and discover new originals.

"Some of the authors do pitch-perfect imitations of the original, such as Parker's literalization of "the Nose" which, despite being set in modern Florida, read as if Gogol himself wrote it. Some deliver an utterly different experience from the original--most notably Anthony crafting the madness of Poe's murderer into a pasted-magazine-text journal. Some reflect on the original's theme from a new perspective...the authors included are all obvious talents." - Slug Magazine

"The exceedingly entertaining pieces in Cover Stories can easily stand on their own. But don't stop there. At the end of the book, you'll find the originals these writers selected as starting points. If you're not familiar with them, do the research for a double dose of fun and erudition." -- Valerie Wieland, New Pages
