About this Item
Small covered sugar bowl complete with lid. (10.7 X 7.2 cm.) Decorated with concentric green lines and a green crest on the bowl. Slight crackling of the glaze otherwise in fine condition. Manufacturer's name on the bottom. This bowl was made for Pullen House, a hotel in Skagway Alaska. It was manufactured by the O.P. Company in Syracuse, New York, probably between 1901 and 1920. Harriet Pullen, the owner and entrepreneur of the hotel, moved to Skagway in 1897, like so many gold crazy people. She left her husband and 4 children but soon her success allowed her to bring them north to join her in Skagway. Harriet even took part in the Rush in Atlin in 1898 but fell and broke her arm and returned to Skagway. In 1901, Harriet opened the Pullen House in the large home built by Captain William Moore. She spent a total of 50 years in Skagway and interestingly, collected Alaskan memorabilia. The O.P. Co. (Onondaga Pottery Company) started in 1871 and was a very successful maker of fine China and Hotel ware. In addition to the manufacturer's name on the bottom there is the name of M Seller & Co. of Portland, Seattle and Spokane. They appear to have been a distributor of hotel products that ceased to operate after 1910. This very nice example is in excellent condition. This piece originally sold in 1973 at the Greenfield Galleries sale of the Pullen Alaska Museum. Pieces of china from the original hotel are very scare. Seller Inventory # 143709
