Coyote Moon (Paperback or Softback)

She survived a cult. A war no one remembers. A courtroom built to break her.

She was never supposed to make it this far.

In June 1862, a cannon blast at a remote Utah fort shatters a young girl's faith, and binds her fate to a war history forgot to tell.

Emma Thompson is a shoemaker's daughter, an immigrant, a woman with nothing but grit standing between her and ruin. She flees a breakaway Mormon sect. She survives an unreliable husband. She chases steamboat dreams through Montana mining towns and the raw, unfinished settlements of the Idaho frontier.

And then they put her beliefs on trial.

History remembers the prophets. The generals. The vigilantes who rode through the American West and called it justice. Coyote Moon remembers the woman caught in their crossfire, and refuses to let her disappear.

Based on the little-known Morrisite War, this is historical fiction at its most unflinching, immigrant poverty, religious extremism, frontier lawlessness, and one woman's refusal to be erased by any of it.

If you loved the quiet devastation of The Giver of Stars or the unbroken women of News of the World, Emma Thompson is the heroine you didn't know you were waiting for.

Rick Just is a native Idahoan who grew up on a ranch along the Blackfoot River. He is the author of four young adult novels, two adult novels, and several books on Idaho history, A Kid's Guide to Boise, Fearless-Farris Lind, the Man Behind the Skunk, and a history of Idaho's State Parks.
