176 p. Black plastic spiral binding along top. Lay-flat format as pages flip over. Stiff cardboard covers, front: red, white, black w/ barrel. 15x23 cm. Pen&Ink art from lithographs. Facsimile Keyes signature with Introduction. C.H. (Bim) Stamm selected and edited additional (non recipe) materials. The Cracker Barrel Bazaar began in Newbury, Vermont, in 1952. Settled along the Connecticut River in 1762, the village had grown to about 400 residents in 1952, and the Bazaar became an annual August event. American fiction author Frances Parkinson Keyes had roots there, and she describes Cousins Mary and Ellen and their tasty offerings from Newbury kitchens. The format includes reprinting of a 1956 White House letter from Mrs Eisenhower's secretary, with the First Lady's Devil's Food Cake recipe with Frosting. Advertising and local history is interspersed, and contributors' names accompany each recipe, formatted in categories. Planning for a grand crowd? Check the back pages for "Cooking in Quantity" (for 50 or 100). For baked beans, 3 quarts unbaked pea beans are needed. Very good. This "must-read" collection has "must happen" light soiling but few real blemishes.
