Creating Holocaust Memory (Hardcover)

Creating "Holocaust memory" has been an evolving, ongoing process. This volume surveys developments in a number of major disciplines and social sectors, followed by case studies that each express the ongoing dynamics of Holocaust memory and commemoration in a particular field.

Encompassing numerous fields and taking place in dozens of countries worldwide for close to eight decades, Holocaust remembrance and commemoration has taken on diverse forms and includes abundant content. However, keeping memory alive is dependent upon its remaining relevant to each generation. The "Creating Holocaust Memory" initiative that also gives this book its title is devoted to creating a new language of Holocaust memory for each generation that will make it relevant to them. The second half of the book describes a number of projects connected to the initiative, explaining the dynamics of keeping Holocaust memory alive for a new generation.

The volume is intended toward both academic and general audiences interested in Holocaust memory, remembrance, and commemoration. It can also be used as a textbook for courses that pertain to the Holocaust and its aftermath, Holocaust commemoration, and the Holocaust as reflected in the humanities, social sciences, the arts, media, and technology.

Martin Herskovitz is the son of a Holocaust survivor, a poet who manages a philanthropic fund and a Spiegel Fellow at the Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research. He developed the "Creating Memory" initiative and funds innovative approaches in poetry, art, and performances to ensure the continuation of Holocaust Remembrance.

Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz is the Director of the Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research and Professor in the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry, Bar-Ilan University, Israel. She has written and edited numerous books and articles about the Holocaust and its aftermath.
