James Adams’ journey to becoming a CTO was anything but straightforward. He bypassed the typical university path, diving into the world of programming with a Sinclair ZX81 and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. From coding with COBOL as a teenager to leading technology teams at global financial institutions like Citigroup, James’s story is one of perseverance, continuous learning, and embracing both hard technology skills and essential soft skills.

This book goes beyond the typical job descriptions to reveal the authentic, day-to-day experiences of a CTO. Forget the corporate buzzwords and idealized scenarios; James shares the real challenges and triumphs, the tough decisions, and the constant need for adaptability in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

He reveals the creative tension at the heart of the CTO role: balancing technological vision with pragmatic solutions, driving innovation while managing risk, and fostering a culture of creativity within a complex organization. He draws from his diverse experience, including his time at Oracle and in the high-pressure world of financial services, to offer valuable lessons on navigating complex organizational structures, overcoming “impostor syndrome,” and building high-performing teams. He also provides practical frameworks for architecture, governance, strategy, and leadership—the four cornerstones of successful technology leadership.

Whether you’re an aspiring CTO charting your own course or a seasoned leader looking for fresh perspectives, this book offers a candid and insightful guide to thriving in the world of technology leadership. James’s story is a testament to the power of curiosity, continuous learning, and the courage to forge your own path to success.
