Batsford ; Charles T. Branford Co, 1974, 93pp., . A few illustrations in color but most are in black and white. - Recognizing that thread has qualities not present in other media. - It is only in recent times that it has been truly recognized that thread possesses qualities inimitable in other media. - The aim of this book is to consider the potential of thread as a creative medium. This can best be done by exploring and experiencing the very nature of thread. The appearance of new fibres is a constant impetus and challenge to the curious mind. - The creative potential of thread is enormous. Such a huge range of threads is available and there are so many different ways of using them that panels, hangings and three-dimensional constructions can be created with a variety of texture, colour and form that is unequalled in any other craft. Mair Morris first discusses the different threads. These include cotton, silk, wool, strinq, rope, raffia and leather thongs; strips of fabric, plastic vegetable bags and cellophane; metal and nylon threads. Many different types can be used in combination, or a design can be made simply from one thread in its many different forms. Mrs Morris shows how important it is to discover the qualities and potential of each thread, and explains how this can be done by constant experimental work. Many of the methods Mrs Morris describes are borrowed from traditional craft techniques: for example, knitting, crochet, hooking, knotting, sewing by hand and machine, collage and weaving. In order to achieve unusual textures and forms these methods are used in unconventional ways; thus knitting can be done with the fingers, or a tree branch can be used as a frame for weaving. Various ways of dyeing thread are also discussed, and suggestions given as to how to make three- dimensional forms. This book is full of ideas and illustrations which in themselves are immensely stimulating. In addition, it contains much practical advice and information which will commend it to the inexperienced designer. Mair Morris is senior lecturer in textile art at Ethel Wormald College of Education, Liverpool. 96 pages 82 black and white photographs 3 line illustrations 4 colour plates. 9780823170333 ISBN 0823170330.
