Creativity, Teaching, and Natural Inspiration (Paperback or Softback)

What happens when a passionate educator refuses to let the system dim his creative spark?

Creativity, Teaching, and Natural Inspiration chronicles the remarkable journey of a high school English teacher who dares to reimagine what education can be. Fighting against the tide of standardized testing, rigid curricula, and bureaucratic constraints, Mark Doherty shows how true teaching can become an art form, one that transforms ordinary objects and genuine life-stories into extraordinary learning experiences.

THE POWER OF UNCONVENTIONAL TEACHING

A chunk of firewood becomes a portal to history. Placed on a classroom table, it’s no longer just wood. It’s a sawmill, a mine timber, an Anasazi artifact. In the hands of inspired students, it becomes poetry, song, essay, and memoir.

NATURE AS THE ULTIMATE CLASSROOM

A single crane feather awakens literary giants. Through it, students connect with Muir, Thoreau, Audubon, Leopold, and Carson, discovering that nature and creativity are inseparable teachers.

ONE TEACHER’S BATTLE AGAINST THE SYSTEM

Blending memoir, anecdote, poetry, and dialogue, Doherty weaves a compelling narrative about creative pedagogy’s transformative power. Each chapter pulses with the same creative energy he brings to his classroom, proving that unconventional teaching methods can unlock students’ hidden potential and change how they see the world.

But can one teacher’s innovative approach survive in a system designed to standardize everything?

For educators seeking inspiration, students discovering their creative voice, and anyone who believes learning should ignite imagination rather than extinguish it, this book offers both a roadmap and a rallying cry.

When long-time outdoorsman, songwriter, and poet Mark Doherty decided he needed a stable profession for his day job in the 1990's, he began his career as a high school teacher. But Doherty never really left the outdoors and his music behind; he just incorporated them into his creative approach to teaching high school English and writing. After earning his BA in English and Writing from his home state of Colorado at Western State University, Doherty spent ten years working as a musician, backcountry guide, and freelance writer in Southern Utah. Later he earned a teaching degree from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and now teaches International Baccalaureate Senior English as well as 11th grade core English in Midvale, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City located at the foot of the Wasatch Mountain Range. He earned his Master's Degree in Writing Nonfiction from Southern New Hampshire University in November of 2016.
