Corey P. Smith was born on November 20, 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee. Being the son of a captain in the United States Marine Corps, granted him the opportunity to travel and attend many different schools throughout the United States. Once his father retired from the Marine Corps, his family settled in Ocala, Florida, where he was a graduate of Lake Weir High school. Corey went on to attend Cleveland State Community college on a basketball scholarship. After, leaving Cleveland State community college he went on to attend Tennessee State University, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. After graduating from college, Corey enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve for two years while teaching high school history. While doing so he discovered something that troubled him greatly. He noticed that public schools were creating a curriculum that did not consist of any classes related to credit, banking or finance. This caused him to examine his own credit and financial state, which sparked a quest in him to do something to promote social economic awareness with regards to education. Corey made a conscious decision to quit teaching school and resign from the Navy, to dedicate all of his time and attention to researching the credit bureaus, financial institutions and how they are related to the public school systems. For two years he did thorough research on the credit bureaus, which led him to write and publish a book entitled “How to Outsmart the Credit Bureaus.” Some of his other business ventures consist of real estate investing and an upcoming documentary entitled “Credit is for Poor People.”
