The regional and stratigraphic distribution of the ammonite assemblages from the epicontinental Cretaceous Basin north of the Guyana-Shield in northern Venezuela is the subject of this book. The age of the sediments extends from the Aptian to the Coniacian Stage. The Venezuelan ammonite species known to date - 28 families with 83 genera - are systematically described and illustrated in 40 plates. Of the species studied 13 are new. The ammonite assemblage provide a basis for a reliable nomenclature of the Cretaceous sediments and serve, moreover, to improve our understanding of the tectonic activity which occured during the Caribbean and the Andean orogenies. An important cotribution is made here towards the clarification of the relation of ammonite assemblages on both sides of the Atlantic. New taxa: Vascoceras venezolanum n. sp., Pseudoneoptychites venezolanus n. sp., Pseudoneoptychites intermedius n. sp., Neoptychites transitorius n. sp., Benueites trinidadensis n. sp., Watinoceras venezolanum n. sp., Mitonia constricta n. sp., Mitonia evoluta n. sp., Kamerunoceras andinum n. sp., Cailopoceras stephani n. sp., Cailopoceras laraense n. sp., Hourcquiidae n. fam., Hourcquia krausei n. sp., Hourcquia moralesi n. sp., Ankinatsytes venezolanus n. sp.
