How Crime Fighters Use Math (Math in the Real World)

When in pursuit of criminals, the police, detectives, and private investigators all use math to capture the wrongdoers. How Crime Fighters Use Math shows how those in law enforcement use math to predict the actions of perpetrators and capture them. Whether collecting clues at a crime scene, analyzing the results of a lie detector test, or cracking the code in a secret message, crime fighters constantly use math to catch criminals and keep people safe.

Concepts and skills emphasized include:

• Number Sense and Operations

Grade 4–6—The layout for these slim titles is bright and colorful with a photograph and a "You Do the Math" problem to solve and large, easy-to-read text on every spread. An answer key is included in the back matter, along with a page detailing the career choices and the educational requirements. Crime Fighters touches on crime-scene grids, the importance of shoe prints in tracking a criminal, cracking secret codes, and more. Deep Sea Divers discusses how divers use math to determine how much air they will need in their tanks and use grids to map underwater shipwrecks. The mathematical topics covered include measurement, estimation, data analysis, and problem solving. In Race Car Drivers, readers learn about qualifying times, track designs, and tracking fuel. Baseball Managers includes such topics as how managers rely on player statistics to make decisions and why the pitch count is important to monitor. These titles would be useful to supplement lessons on mathematics. They will also appeal to students wanting to learn more about math as it relates to specific careers.—Maren Ostergard, King County Library System, Issaquah, WA
