About the Author

Coming from a long line of independent-minded women, Patricia learned self-reliance and preparedness skills as a matter of course. Whether picking strawberries to earn spending money, sewing her own clothes, or helping with the fall canning, she developed a can-do mindset at a young age. As a young wife and mother, Patricia continued her interest in self-reliance and preparedness and encouraged and supported her husband Jack as he wrote the original Crisis Preparedness Handbook, testing many of the preparedness ideas, methods, and equipment he advocated. Patricia earned a degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Oregon and a MEd from Utah State University and has been in one teaching role or another her entire adult life. After Jack died in 2005, Patricia continued to publish CPH and promote preparedness ideas. In 2015, she set out to update and revise CPH, but, ever a teacher, she realized she had something to offer others and ended up executing a full-scale rewrite and repurposing of the book, creating an all new third edition. Patricia lives with her husband D. Craig Aston in Logan, Utah, and they continue to develop new skills and practice a self-reliant lifestyle. Their latest self-reliant projects are adding raised beds to their garden and raising a small flock of chickens.
