In fair condition. Front board is detached. Boards show typical wear with surface scuffing, edge wear, rounded corners. Bottom compartment of spine missing. First edition lacking half title page and ads, as is common - number of printing is unknown. This play was a burlesque on stage acting and play production conventions, and Sheridan considered the first act to his finest piece of writing. One of its major roles, Sir Fretful Plagiary, is a comment on the vanity of authors, and in particular a caricature of the dramatist Richard Cumberland who was a contemporary of Sheridan. Sheridan was an Irish satirist, a playwright and poet, and long-term owner of the London Royal Theatre. He was also a while for the British House of Commons for Stafford (1780-1806), Westminster (1806-1807), and Ilchester (1807-1812). He is buried at Poet s Corner in Westminster Abbey.
