Two volumes of Lord Macaulay's highly praised historical and critical essays, in a signed prize binding by the Relfe Brothers. In a full calf signed prize binding by the Relfe Brothers, presented by the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral. Complete in two volume. These volumes contain a number of essay Lord Macaulay contributed to the Edinburgh Review. The essays had been highly praised for their readability, but also criticised for their unwavering Whig sympathies. The essays include 'Machiavelli', 'Burleigh and His Times', 'Lord Bacon', 'Leigh Hunt', 'Madame D'Arblay', and more. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a Whig politician and British historian, being a prolific writer of essays, poems, and political and historical works. He served in numerous political roles, including Secretary at War and Paymaster-General. Macaulay may be best known for his five volume work 'The History of England from the Accession of James II', the publication of which earned him the respect as a historian. In a full calf signed prize binding by the Relfe Brothers. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the joints and extremities, with a little loss to the boards of Volume I, with a small patch of worming to the rear board also. Some loss of leather to the head of the spine to the rear joint of Volume II. Head of the spine to the front joint of Volume I is lifting. Front joint of Volume II is strained. Cracks to the head of the joints of Volume I, and to the head of the rear joint of Volume II. Volume I is lacking most of the spine label, and Volume II is lacking the spine label. Light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Binder's stamp to the verso to the front endpaper. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Northgate School, Lincoln, Christmas 1901, Oscar Boultbee Raven'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good.
