A limited edition copy of this interesting analysis of Scottish language, written by the French historian Francisque Xavier Michel. A limited edition, being one of five-hundred copies. 'With the publisher's compliments' blind stamp to the title page. A publishers' presentation copy and out of series. This work is a very interesting analysis into the Scots language, looking at how much the French had an influence over Scottish life and language. The author looks at the language of architecture, clothing, fine arts, law, dances, games, and more. Written by Francisque Xavier Michel, a French historian who was sent to England and Scotland by the French Government for research. He was the professor of foreign language at the University of Bordeaux, and also published translations of Shakespeare, Alfred Tennyson, and Oliver Goldsmith. Ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'John Murray'. In the original publisher's straight grain morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, with slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of the spine. Further light rubbing and some small surface cracks to the spine. Bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Minor marking to the boards. Ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'John Murray'. Front hinge is starting but firm. 'With the publisher's compliments' blindstamp to the title page. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just a touch of age-toning, with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first and last few pages, and occasional handling marks.
