About this Item

First Edition, Eleventh Printing. Critique of Practical Reason by Immanuel Kant, translated by Lewis White Beck, is a foundational work in moral philosophy, where Kant explores the nature of human agency, morality, and ethical decision-making. In this text, Kant delves into the concept of practical reason, which he defines as the ability to make decisions based on moral principles, rather than purely on empirical knowledge or desires. He argues that moral actions are not determined by consequences but by adherence to a universal moral law, which he famously articulates through the categorical imperative. Kant examines how practical reason can guide individuals toward moral actions that respect the dignity and autonomy of others. The work also addresses the relationship between freedom and morality, emphasizing that true freedom is found in the ability to act according to moral laws. The Critique of Practical Reason is crucial for understanding Kant s ethical philosophy and his broader ideas about human autonomy, duty, and moral law.
