two volumes, 4to, each vol 33 cms (13 ins) x 24.5 cms (9.5 ins), xvi,498pp and xvi;132,[i]pp, title page printed red, sepia and black with armorial device, numerous plans, engravings, facsimile documents and illustrations throughout- all present in both volumes as called for, marbled endpapers, with the binders additional inner parchment endpapers, decorated heads and tails to chapter and decorated capitals, light spotting to the edges of a few plates, however, text overall very clean, binding: very fine matching full vellum by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with their stamps on upper margin of verso of ffeps, bevelled edges, inner gilt rules, gilt rules to boards, contrasting labels with title etc gilt, very firm, a beautiful edition. Please note: this is a very heavy item and will incur an increase in cost of postage.Notes: Both volumes carry the presentation inscription "V. from H. 1921". His career was as a high ranking civil servant, however, he was also responsible for writing a number of official or semi official biographies of well known, celebrated contemporary figures as well as works on significant contemporary events, all were published by L'Imprimerie Nationale.Sangorksi and Sutcliffe: bookbinders established in London in 1901, a leading specialist in the finest examples of bookbinding and one of the world's most important firms during the 20th Century.
