About this title

Synopsis

The Cross And Anchor Written For The Fair: In Aid Of The Mariner’s Church, Providence, R. I., April, 1844 by Mrs. Edward B. Hall is a collection of devotional poetry published to aid a seafaring charity. The volume gathers hymns, moral dialogues, and narratives anchored in Christian faith and maritime imagery. Its centerpiece is a series of devotional poems that fuse biblical allusion with nautical allegory—the Cross and Anchor serve as symbols of steadfast faith through storms, temperance, repentance, and spiritual renewal. The pieces follow a sailor’s perspective from fear and peril to trust in Providence, with episodes ranging from visions at sea to prayers in the conference-room, scenes of temperance, and encounters with temptation. Interleaved are didactic pieces on conscience, repentance, and the Christian journey, including dialogues between good and bad spirits and a mother's plea against demonic possession. Overall, the work reads as a moralizing, evangelical miscellany intended to inspire charity, piety, and courage among seafaring communities and readers alike.
