Title: Crossing the Hellgate River - May 5th, 1854 - Dramatic Lithograph from Railroad Survey This striking lithograph captures the perilous crossing of the Hellgate River on May 5th, 1854, as part of the Pacific Railroad Surveys. The scene portrays a dramatic moment of survival and teamwork, as the men navigate the rushing waters with their belongings secured on makeshift rafts of driftwood. The precarious balance and raw determination of the figures evoke the challenges faced by explorers in charting routes through the rugged landscapes of the American West. Created after a sketch by artist Gustavus Sohon, this lithograph was meticulously printed by Sarony, Major & Knapp of New York. The precise details of the swirling waters and the gnarled tree trunks lend a vivid realism to the scene, showcasing the lithographic technique's ability to bring historical moments to life. The Hellgate River, depicted in this lithograph, is the historical name for what is now known as the Clark Fork River, located in western Montana, USA. The specific crossing illustrated in the lithograph took place during the Pacific Railroad Surveys, which were part of mid-19th-century efforts to chart potential routes for a transcontinental railroad. The name "Hellgate" originally referred to the narrow canyon near present-day Missoula, Montana. The area earned the name due to its history of frequent ambushes by local tribes. The surrounding region is characterized by rugged mountains, forested valleys, and the river itself, which cuts through the landscape. Today, the Clark Fork River remains a prominent feature of Montana's geography and history. Condition summary: Light foxing and minor edge wear; excellent overall preservation of detail.
