Crossplane Compositions: Building a Self-Service Internal Cloud Platform

"Crossplane Compositions: Building a Self‑Service Internal Cloud Platform"

This book is for experienced Kubernetes and platform engineers who want to turn infrastructure provisioning into a product: a self-service internal cloud platform with stable APIs, predictable behavior, and guardrails that scale across teams. Instead of treating Crossplane as “Kubernetes for cloud resources,” it frames Crossplane as a control plane—designed for continuous reconciliation, multi-tenancy, and an operator-grade consumer experience where status and failure modes are part of the UX.

You’ll learn to design and evolve platform APIs with XRDs, then implement those contracts with compositions that encode defaults, lifecycle ownership, deletion/retention policies, and secure outputs such as connection details and secrets. The core of the book goes deep on modern Crossplane pipeline compositions and functions: how to build deterministic, convergent pipelines; inject environment context without hard-coding policy; migrate from legacy patch-and-transform; and establish rigorous authoring loops using the Crossplane CLI to render, validate, and regression-test platform changes.

Operationally, it connects architecture to production reality: provider footprint and activation, credential and identity propagation, RBAC-driven tenancy, GitOps delivery models that separate platform definitions from consumption, and end-to-end observability from XR to composed resources. The guidance is anchored in Crossplane’s v2 era, emphasizing compatibility-aware design choices and day-2 workflows with Operations wh
