Reprint. Condition: Very Good. Softcover. Dover Publications, 1956. This new Dover edition, first published in 1956, is an unabridged and corrected edition of the book originally published [in 1939] under the title 'Elementary Cryptanalysis'. Softcover (14 x 21 cm), vi, 237 pages. ISBN: 0486200973. Very Good condition. Wraps are bumped, scuffed/scratched and soiled. Creased at corners. "Gaines's 'Cryptanalysis' is a standard elementary and intermediate text for persons seriously interested in modern scientific methods for enciphering and deciphering cryptograms. It does not simply repeat older material, but contains much about modern cryptanalysis that is not generally known except to experts. It is especially strong in modern forms of cipher solution. This clear and thorough text also provides you with 166 specimen codes to solve. This edition for the first time also includes solutions. A special appendix includes final letters, sequence charts, digram, trigram tables, most common words in English and frequencies in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.". Paperback. Condition: Very Good. [From the library of Benjamin B. King.] Softcover. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Edges rubbed/bumped. Pages unmarked. "Benjamin B. King was an intelligence officer for the British Royal Air Force during World War II. After World War 2 broke out in Europe in September 1939, he joined the British Royal Air Force as a 'penguin' who could not fly because of eyesight problems. He was assigned to Coastal Command at the airbase in Wick in the very north of Scotland, which provided defense for Britain in the North Sea, engaging the Germany Navy and Air Force. After his stint at Wick, Ben was transferred to the vital but vulnerable British base at Gibraltar off the coast of Spain, where the British monitored German and Italian military operations in the Western Mediterranean. While in Gibraltar, one of his tasks was to listen to Luftwaffe radio communications and track the movement of German and Italian airplanes. After Gibraltar, Ben was called back to Britain and assigned to the secret British code-breaking operations at Bletchley Park in England, which played a critical role in the Allies' war effort by monitoring and decoding German military communications and ultimately breaking the German Enigma code." - Obit.
