About this Item

8vo (23.0 x 15.5 cm).Original maroon blind stamped cloth; spine with gilt author and title, bands defined by gilt lines, sunned; small ink mark at top of front cover. Collation:[4 half title;title], x, 217 pp. + 9 hand colored lithograph plates. Text has some marginal minor foxing for first few leaves and occasional very minor foxing spots in margins away from text on a few leaves. This is a large margin copy. Plates are very good and free of foxing. Plates no. 1 & 2 and 8 & 9 are connected to a stub; plates no. 4 and 5 are trimmed at fore edge, affecting the cone (Fig.4) and needles (Fig. 5). There are 11 chapters that start with Preface, description of different pines, firs and larch, different soils in which conifers grow, cultivation of forest, plantations, pruning, lumbering, growth of conifers, maladies, enemies and products. Gihoul provides considerable information on numerous conifers (pines, firs and larch) which come under the category of resinous trees. His detailed information drawn from a wide number of sources covers growth of different conifers, their properties, culture and forest management including information on insects notably the pine bettle. This information is most useful for the forester. This is a scarce work which also contains a chapter dealing with different terrains (and soils) on which conifers can grow with discussion on the pattern of growth therein. In 1847 there were three publications of this work: Breda in the Netherlands, Paris and Bruxelles. The two references citing this work, noted below, list Breda as the city of publication. All copies are identical in text and plates. The only difference is the city and publisher. (Daydon et al. Veg. Tech.1883, p.250; Rheder, IV, 441). Bookseller Inventory # 0000709
