Cunnie Rabbit, Mr. Spider, and the Other Beef by Florence M. Cronise and Henry W. Ward is a captivating collection of Sierra Leonean folk tales that vividly reflect the wit, humor, and wisdom of West African storytelling traditions. First published in 1910, this volume records stories gathered from the Mendi people, offering an intimate glimpse into the cultural imagination of West Africa.
The tales feature trickster figures such as Cunnie Rabbit and Mr. Spider, whose cleverness and mischief echo similar characters in Caribbean and African American folklore. Through humor and moral insight, these stories reveal timeless lessons about intelligence, justice, and survival within community life.
Blending linguistic authenticity with anthropological curiosity, Cronise and Ward's work remains a landmark in early folklore collection and preservation. Cunnie Rabbit, Mr. Spider, and the Other Beef stands as an enduring tribute to the storytelling genius of the African oral tradition and its influence across the diaspora.
