Curiosities of Literature

Curiosities Of Literatureis a compact survey of early modern and Restoration Britain framed through anecdotes, diaries, literature, and antiquarian lore. The work threads court life, literary culture, and the habits by which a nation records itself through witty portraits, critical sketches, and historical anecdotes. It assembles portraits of Prince Henry, the Master of the Ceremonies, diaries as historical sources, and themes such as censorship, wordplay, orthography, and the history of printing. Across sections it surveys the social economy of books, the rituals of the court, the transmission of texts, and the making of literary memory—how authors, editors, publishers, critics, and readers shape what a culture remembers. In tone, it blends charm and erudition, offering a mosaic of personalities, genres, and practices that illuminate the culture of remembrance in early modern Europe.
