Current Concepts in Cleft Lip and Palate Management

This book provides a comprehensive review of cleft lip and palate, covering its embryology, etiology, classification, diagnosis, and multidisciplinary management from infancy to adulthood. It explains that CL/P is a common congenital craniofacial anomaly caused by the failure of fusion of facial structures during embryonic development, with both genetic and environmental factors contributing to its occurrence. This book discusses various classification systems, prenatal diagnosis, parental counselling, presurgical orthodontic techniques such as nasoalveolar molding, and a wide range of surgical procedures for cleft lip and palate repair. It also describes the management of complications, including oronasal fistulas and maxillary growth deficiency, through distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery, as well as secondary rhinoplasty to improve facial aesthetics and function. Overall, this book emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, pediatricians, and psychologists to restore normal feeding, speech, hearing, dental occlusion, facial appearance, and psychosocial well-being, thereby improving the long-term quality.
