Gr 9 Up--There are many contentious issues concerning the rights of America's native citizens. This title offers a full spectrum of opinions and arguments dealing with four of those issues: Native culture, resources, sovereignty, and gaming. Each chapter begins with an introduction to one question, which is followed by three to six articles from a variety of sources--newspapers and journals, senate testimony, television commentary, and books--and representing a variety of viewpoints. The more than 30 authors represent tribal members and officials, non-Indian citizens, officials of the U.S. government, activists, economists, professors, entrepreneurs, journalists, attorneys, judges, and many others. Some of the arguments are thoughtfully and clearly presented; some are self-indulgent. Some are full of lawyerly rhetoric; others are frivolous to the point of pointlessness. Some are compelling; others are exasperating. Anyone looking for various viewpoints on these issues, or a subject to debate, need look no further. An extensive index is helpful for research, as is the bibliography. A list of organizations to contact will be welcomed by anyone wishing to delve even deeper into the subjects.
