At the present time, Pediatricians in India are offered a very wide choice of options to increase their practical skills and knowledge in various disciplines of Pediatrics. There are numerous scientific conferences, CME programmes, sponsored symposia, and practical workshops to choose from.In fact, it is sometimes difficult to choose amongst this bewildering array of scientific (and other) offerings. There is also no dearth of reading material, ranging from textbooks, chapters in books, and of course the published (indexed) literature. Against such a backdrop, where does this volumeon Current Pediatrics Practice stand?This volume was initiated in 2013 during the Golden Jubilee Year of PGIMER, Chandigarh, to commemorate 50 years of clinical service and teaching activities in Pediatrics at PGIMER. From a fledgling department with one Faculty member, it has now grown to a giant tree with 36 Faculty members, and over 150 resident doctors. This growth has advanced the field of Pediatrics itself in India, and the South Asian region. It is not surprising that there are numerous demands from various quarters, for benefitting from the knowledge and skills of the Faculty of this department.This book is a step forwards in that direction. The volume has been carefully prepared bearing in mind the needs of Pediatricians in private practice as well as teaching institutions. Among the sixteen chapters of this book, readers will identify several topics of common, day-to-day interest, that are never really taught in most postgraduate programmes, and therefore become confusing over time. Classic examples are the interpretation of CBC (Hemogram) printouts and TORCH reports. Likewise, this book presents the common challenges and pitfalls with various methods for diagnosing tuberculosis, and the optimalapproach in the Indian context. There is a whole chapter devoted to the diagnosis, management and follow-up of febrile seizures.The contributors to this book have put great efforts to present state-of-the-art reviews on cerebral palsy, autistic spectrum disorders, management of septic shock, common pediatric poisonings and diabetes. Pediatricians will also find the chapters on bleeding disorders and childhood malignancies particularly user-friendly.While this book complements and supplements the presentations during the Scientific CME during 23-24 February 2014, it also has value as a stand-alone book. As in the previous volume, most chapters are presented in a simple-to-read, user-friendly style. We do hope that everyone perusing this book will find it interesting and also beneficial in their personal practice of Pediatrics.
