The author(1882-1859) was a captain in the Bengal Engineers and artist. He was the son of the surgeon James Atkinson. Atkinson's paintings depicted colonial military life in India both in peace and action. In this edition the b/w sketches by the author of earlier editions had become 40*hand-coloured lithographed plates each protected by glassine paper. Unpaginated, 91pp. Original publishers cloth bindings. Brown cloth boards with gilt decoration to upper board and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt to all page edges. Light shelf-wear to extremities. Spine cloth sunned. Marbled endpapers. Heavy foxing to title page with only the lightest foxing to the margins close to the page edges elsewhere. Pages and text-block sound.

We aim is to supply books in the condition described and seek to describe any imperfections. It should be noted that all books are pre-owned, often of significant age and have lived a life of extensive use, few are in perfect condition. If on receipt you are not happy with the book then we will be happy to discuss and if necessary to take the book back, providing of course it is in the condition that it was sent out. Our postage costs are based upon the average weight of an octavo sized book and packaging (roughly 1kg), if the book weighs significantly more than this then we may contact you to ask for additional postage fees. All of our books are packaged in purpose made book packaging and are carefully wrapped to give the book the best chance of arriving in the condition that it was sent out in.
