A very scarce alternative to textbooks for biology teachers, hoping to stimulate the imagination while teaching basic principles. The very scarce A Cycle of Nature Study suitable for Children under Twelve Years of Age: Being Suggestions for Teachers in Town and Country Schools, written by headmistress Maria Matilda Penstone. Published in 1908, with the chapters first published in the School Guardian. Only five copies of this work are institutionally held in the UK, including at the British Library. In the publisher's original green cloth, with in-text illustrations by Helen Phillips. Offering an alternative to the rather weighty and dry textbooks offered to teachers, this charming guide contains easy-to-understand principles and facts for those teaching biology. Penstone, who also managed a training college for kindergarten teachers, believed in tailoring lessons to the child's imagination. In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with a couple of faint marks. Slight rubbing to joints and edges, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Slight offsetting to end papers with a couple of faint spots. Previous owner's ink inscriptions to front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound.
