A charmingly put together compilation of materials related to Shaw's rewriting of Shakespeare's Cymbeline including the program, the preface by Shaw, press notices published before opening night, and reviews including those in the Times and the New Statesman. Nineteenth century critics tended to gripe with Cymbeline, especially its ending, and Shaw wrote in agreement in 1896 that the play was "stagey trash of the lowest melodramatic order." In this "Cymbeline Refinished," Shaw reimagines the final act, cutting it by more than half. The response to Shaw's version at the Embassy Theatre was mixed, a fact that the person who put together this compilation did not shy away from, including a review by the New Statesman (a publication Shaw was the founding director of) which concludes "Altogether a most unlucky evening."
