Through Cyprus

Step off the steamer and into a crossroads of empires. In Through Cyprus, Agnes Smith records a work of eastern Mediterranean travel that moves from harbour towns to upland villages, pairing quick wit with patient attention to place. Her eye for ordinary detail - a meal, a rough track, the sound of an unfamiliar tongue - keeps the journey intimate, even when history looms close by. Cyprus feels close, and distant. This Victorian travel narrative reads as a complete travel narrative: roads, weather, conversation, and the steady pull of the past. Part 19th century travelogue, part cultural record, the book opens a window onto 19th century Cyprus, its rhythms of work and worship, and the layered textures of Cyprus history and culture. Behind the scenes are the practicalities of Victorian travel and the era's shifting powers, making this 19th century travelogue also a valuable witness to the island's change. Smith writes in the tradition of Victorian women travelers who travelled with curiosity and resolve, noting how Mediterranean island journeys can turn suddenly toward ancient sites and ruins. For readers who love armchair travel reading, it offers vivid movement without modern mediation; for collectors, it stands as a public domain travel classic and a key specimen of classic Middle East travel, where the Levant and the Mediterranean meet. Republished by Alpha Editions in a modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
