He spent the early 1820s in Brazil making a series of topographical, social and ethnographic studies of the country. These were the basis for a monumental book which contained more than 100 plates, It is a hugh important record of early 19th century Brazil and shows the significant role of slavery in Brazilian societry. - (Small light stain in upper blank margin).
