A booklet of over twenty (20) cross-stitch patterns published c.1900 by Bibliothek D.M.C. The ocmpany, which remains today a major producer of embroidery thread, was founded in Alsace in 1746 by Jean-Henri Dollfus and became one of the biggest textile companies in Europe in the 20th century. The designs here are constructed like many cross stitch patterns today (perhaps a testament to D.M.C.'s influence) and are comprised of hundreds of colored boxes on a grid. The designs include repeating patterns and decorative borders for use on household linens and clothing. A glimpse into material history and culture at this time, and the material landscape of homes. Single vol. (8" by 11.5"), pp. [2], 20, [4], in original illus. wrps. Note the fabulous repeating bat pattern on plate 3, and the gender roles depicted on plate 20: two men smile and chat, while two women next to them care for babies with frowns. Fair. Light dust soiling, vertical crease, text block loose, a couple stains/spots, rubbing to extremities, short tears.
