About this title

Synopsis

Emperor Mingzong of the Later Tang (Li Siyuan) ruled for eight years, a period widely regarded as a time of "Minor Prosperity" (Xiaokang)-a rare achievement in the turbulent Five Dynasties era. This biography sets out to assess his political accomplishments from the ground up, based on solid historical evidence. The book combines chronological and thematic approaches: the first two chapters trace his background and rise to power; the next two follow the political developments year by year; and the final two chapters take a thematic turn. Unlike earlier studies that focus mainly on the influence of Han Chinese political culture on the Shatuo, this volume emphasizes the lasting political legacy that the Shatuo left to later Chinese history.
