8vo. Volume I: xiv + 547pp. + large folding map with 7 small tears to folds, stored in back pocket. Volume II: xvi + 540pp. + 1 folding map, 1 larger folding map with 3 tears in folds and 1 smaller fine. Original green buckram cloth with gilt, covers have design of Africa on front board and a facsimile signature of Stanley in gilt. Bright fine copy. In January 1887, Stanley began an expedition to rescue the Ottoman-German naturalist and one-time governor of Equatoria, Emin Pasha. Stanley followed a tortuously difficult route, which included a five month journey through rainforest, and lost two-thirds of his party. Stanley succeeded in convincing Emin Pasha to leave Equatoria in 1889.
