Cada vez se sabe m�s sobre los chimpanc�s, los bonobos, los gorilas y los orangutanes, y se ve m�s claramente lo mucho que se parecen a los ni�os humanos de dos a tres a�os. Gracias a organizaciones como Proyecto Gran Simio, son m�s los pa�ses que les dan una protecci�n legal especial, hay m�s juristas dispuestos a defender los derechos de los simios, m�s peticiones de �habeas corpus� y m�s juicios en los que se debate la posible personalidad legal de nuestros hermanos evolutivos. Sin embargo, muchos pa�ses siguen sin darles la protecci�n adecuada, y nuestros primos primates no solo est�n amenazados por el cambio clim�tico, las pandemias y la tala de bosques, sino que tambi�n sufren el acoso de los cazadores furtivos que los secuestran para zoos y espect�culos, para venderlos como mascotas o para comerciar con su carne. Es necesario por eso un gran esfuerzo de coordinaci�n internacional para que puedan sobrevivir como especie y ser respetados como individuos. Ante la urgencia de esta defensa, se hace preciso responder a preguntas como: �qu� derechos deber�an concederse a los grandes simios?, �en qu� se diferencian los derechos hom�nidos de los derechos humanos?, �depende la aceptaci�n de los derechos hom�nidos de nuestra posici�n filos�fica en torno a los derechos en general?, �tiene sentido decir que un chimpanc� es una persona, aunque no sea humano?, �es especista o discriminatorio pedir derechos especiales para los grandes simios? Este libro intenta responder a estas y otras preguntas y explicar al lector c�mo son los no humanos que m�s se nos asemejan y por qu� es apremiante darles la protecci�n que necesitan.

About the Authors

Peter Singer es Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics en el University Center for Human Values en Princeton. Anteriormente, trabaj� en Oxford, Nueva York, La Trobe y Monash. Se le ha descrito como el fil�sofo vivo m�s influyente del mundo y, en 2005, la revista �Time� lo incluy� en la lista de las cien personas m�s influyentes del mundo. Su libro �Liberaci�n animal�, traducido al castellano y a veintitr�s idiomas m�s, es considerado la biblia del movimiento animalista; y �Practical Ethics� (1979), traducido al castellano (2009) y a diecisiete idiomas m�s, es valorado como uno de los cien textos filos�ficos m�s importantes de la historia. Es autor o editor de m�s de cuarenta libros, entre ellos: �El c�rculo en expansi�n� (1981); �Repensando la vida y la muerte� (1996); �Un mundo� (2002); �El presidente del bien y del mal� (2004); �La vida que puedes salvar� (2009); �The Point of View of the Universe� (con Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek, 2014); ��tica para el mundo real� (2016), y �Why Vegan?� (2020).

Paula Casal es Research Professor en la Instituci�n Catalana de Investigaci�n y Estudios Avanzados (ICREA) y en el Departamento de Derecho de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Anteriormente, ha trabajado en Oxford, Keele, Harvard, Louvain-la-Neuve y Stanford. Es editora asociada de �Politics, Philosophy and Economics�, codirectora con Nuria Almir�n del UPF-Center for Animal Ethics, y presidente del �Proyecto Gran Simio�-Espa�a. Escribe sobre justicia social y global, �tica animal y medioambiental, g�nero y bio�tica, en revistas internacionales como �Ethics, Economics and Philosophy�, �Hypatia�, �Journal of Clinical Medicine�, �Journal of Medical Ethics�, �Journal of Moral Philosophy�, �Journal of Political Philosophy�, �Political Studies� y �Utilitas�.
