This important and most obscure work was compiled, written & translated by one of Hearn's most brilliant Japanese students, R. Tanabe. . This series have been out of print and the plates destroyed in the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. There have been no reprints since the reprinting's prior to 1923. . *** A RARE BOOK & SERIES: This series was completely wiped out in the 1923 Kanto earthquake, no plates or copies remained in the publisher's warehouse. WHO WAS BONNER FELLERS: . Fellers was a military attaché in Tokyo prior to World War II, and had tracked down the Koizumi family, including Lafcadio Hearn's wife and son, Kazuo Koizumi. He struck up a close friendship with the family. Fellers had been a student of Lafcadio Hearn's writings, and in 1934-35, after being very impressed with Hearn's insights about the Japanese character. . Brigadier General Fellers had joined MacArthur's Southwest Pacific Command in Australia in late 1943, after having worked for a year in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), predecessor of the CIA. . Fellers maintained a very close relationship with Lafcadio Hearn's first son, Kazuo Koizumi prior to the War. After the war, Kazuo gave Fellers many signed presentation copies of his own books. Immediately after the war as soon as he was able to return to the Koizumi [Hearn] family home in Tokyo, he brought food and other gifts. . Nancy Jane Fellers, daughter of Bonner F. Fellers also developed a close relationship with Kazuo Hearn, Lafcadio Hearn's eldest son. In 1957, Nancy edited the stunning book by Kazuo Koizumi. What makes this copy RARE, UNIQUE and highly COLLECTABLE is the inscription on the top of the first fly leaf reading: "FELLERS Tokyo June 6, 1930." Obviously Fellers bought this quaint little book while acting as the military attaché at the American embassy, Tokyo. This may have been one of his earlier acquisitions by Hear.
