Item description from seller

2010 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1911). SB xiv+ 296 pp Published Price £11.50 Kept by Richard Symonds (1617-1660), a trooper in the King's Lifeguard of Horse, Diary of the Marches of the Royal Army During the Great Civil War is a rare firsthand account of the First English Civil War from a Royalist participant below officer rank. Written in pocket notebooks during the conflict, it records the Royal Army's movements from April 1644 to February 1646, including the victory at Lostwithiel and the disastrous defeat at Naseby.Symonds's account offers an unusually detailed view of campaigning at ground level, recording troop movements, garrison arrangements, weather and the changing fortunes of the Royalist cause. His keen antiquarian interests add another dimension: during the campaigns he documented churches, monuments, heraldry, stained glass and local genealogies, preserving valuable evidence of the pre-war landscape. The manuscript, held by the British Library, was first transcribed and published by Charles Edward Long for the Camden Society in 1859. Combining military observation with antiquarian scholarship, Symonds's diary provides an exceptional perspective on both the experience of campaigning and the England through which the Royal Army marched.
