Original brown calico-grain cloth, gilt lettered on the backstrip: 'Handbook for writers and readers', lettered on the fore-edge as detailed below, new front free endleaf of similar period paper. The three separate titles that form this composite volume were all included in the publisher's 'Familar Quotations Series of Books' and advertised priced at one shilling in cloth or one shilling and sixpence in leather [with] red edges. All the edges (head, tail, and fore) of this volume have been coloured in grey, yellow and red strips to correspond with the component volumes; furthermore, the fore-edge carries an example of edge printing with short-titles of the three parts printed thereon. All the lettering of the edge-titles are slightly curved on (for want of a better description) the horizontal plane. In the case of the 'Synonyms' title there is a clear double impression while the 'Blunders' and 'Classical Dictionary such a double impression, while there is significantly less noticeable. Since there is no 'vertical' distortion of the letters one must assume that this edge printing was not done before the text block was rounded prior to insertion in the case and that they were perhaps added by means of something like a binder's letter-holder, rather than on a letterpress printing press; possibly, given the variations in degrees of double impression, in three stages.
