Ex libris with rubber stamp of James Mears Van Slyke, of Madison, WI. The spine label identifies this as volume 24 Russell was the prime competitor with Darwin for the origin of species. This work was co-authored by W. T. Thiselton Dyer. Other contributors here are James Hinton, Andrew Wilson, W. B. Dallas, Grant Allen. Wallace's article first appeared in 1855. Here it was issued as No. 64 in the HUMBOLDT LIBRARY OF SCIENCE. The Humboldt Library started about 1880.
