Add to basketHardback, (US reprint - 1st pub. 1931). The story of Prohibition, which became effective at midnight on January 16, 1920. This was the start of a new experiment in the US. 24 hours later the public received its first enforcement news - 4 stills were raided - 2 in Detroit and 2 in Hammond, Indiana. By 1930, however, it was abundantly clear that the federal government had failed to persuade the states to make a realistic effort to enforce prohibition within the US, and plans for repeal were put into place. National prohibition by constitutional amendment had begun as the golden dream of thousands of devoted men and women. At the end of a decade it had precipitated a struggle which was to test the political wisdom of the American Republic. With Appendices and Index. 343pp. 8vo. h/back. Browned edges, and lightly browned eps, sunned sp. Green cloth with gilt lettering and motif to fr. cover. Vg.
