Scarce early printing of this dime instructional manual, one of Tousey's Ten Cent Hand Books or Ten Cent Handbooks, first published in 1878 with a color cover, though the same illustration. Yet later printings switched art, but returned to color. This 1890 printing seems to be the same as the 1878 edition held by the Library of Congress up to page 46, including a brief & early explanation of the Tango, then it omits about 14 pages of information on the German or Parlor Cotillion, several quadrilles, general comments on dance, the supper room (with a little table etiquette), and advice for waltzers, replacing those pages with Directions for Calling Square Dances, which may be in part distilled versions of the quadrille instructions omitted, but more likely reflective of the growing use of callers, rather than memorization of steps & sequences. Small pamphlet, as pictured. Worn & torn, several tears to covers & pages, some mended, light creasing, chips, pages tanned. Delicate, but not necessarily fragile. Text clean, no names or marks. 60 pages plus 4 pages ads, for Old King Bradley in the New York Detective Library, the Boys' Star Library, Golden Weekly, Frank Reade stories in the 5 Cent Wide Awake Library. The rear cover lists Our 10 Cent Books, about 64 of them, mostly 'How To' titles, with a couple of cook books, joke books, biographies. Size: 4¼" by 6½".
