Grade 6 & Up--The pressure on teenagers to be thin and attractive is unquestionably great. Increasing numbers are turning to elective surgery to change their looks. Alagna clearly sees this as a dangerous trend, and warns readers against such a choice from the first page of her book. Popular procedures considered include liposuction, breast augmentation and reduction, tummy tucks, eyelid and face-lifts, dermabrasion, ear pinning, phalloplasty, rhinoplasty, and collagen injections. General and particular complications are outlined, and board certification of plastic surgeons is addressed. While the color photos are mercifully lacking in gore, Alagna devotes considerable space to horror stories of cosmetic surgery gone awry, resulting in disfigurement and death. Readers considering surgery may be frightened away from it by this presentation. Alan Gaynor's Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Cosmetic Surgery but Couldn't Afford to Ask (Broadway, 1998) offers a more balanced view. Written by a plastic surgeon who has undergone the procedures himself, it highlights new developments making cosmetic surgery less invasive.
