Daoist Cultivation, Book 16 - Debates on the Cultivation of True Reality: Translation and Commentary

Debates on the Cultivation of True Reality By Liu Yiming (劉一明), Translation and Commentary

A profound Daoist classic on inner transformation, self-cultivation, and the true meaning of the Golden Elixir.

Debates on the Cultivation of True Reality (《修真辯難》) is one of the most systematic and penetrating works in the Daoist internal alchemy (Neidan, 內丹) tradition. Attributed to Liu Yiming (1734–1821), a great master of the Quanzhen school, this text presents a rich series of over 120 question-and-answer exchanges between the adept Wuyuanzi and his disciples.

With clarity, precision, and depth, the dialogue explores every major aspect of Daoist cultivation—including the dual cultivation of Xìng (性, original nature) and Mìng (命, life-force), the refinement of Qì (氣, energy), the symbolic meaning of alchemical terms such as Lead and Mercury, and the proper method for forming the Golden Elixir (金丹). The format not only conveys doctrine, but preserves the feel of a living oral transmission—full of subtle warnings, sharp distinctions, and heartfelt guidance.

This edition includes:

• A complete and faithful English translation of the full text
• Xìng, Mìng, and Qì preserved in transliteration, with in-depth explanations
• Extensive commentary on the text, explaining passages and classical symbolism.
• A translator’s introduction and a final reflection to support the reader’s own path of cultivation

Written for serious students of Daoism as well as those curious about authentic inner alchemical teachings, this book serves as both a reference and a guide. It offers not shortcuts, but clarity—a mirror for the path, the practitioner, and the subtle workings of Heaven and Earth.
