The book deals with the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti who wrote during stringent Victorian times when women’s poetry had to suffer several onslaughts of conventional standards of thought and practice, since it gave expression to the woman writer’s hidden and personal experience through language – a subject that was formerly taken up only as a supplementing device. Amidst such challenges of a stifling convention, they wrote resiliently about the power of female art and the struggles of intelligent women for cultural autonomy.
