Dark and Fair

Dark And Fair by Sir Charles Rockingham. A satirical nineteenth?century romance set in Rockingham Hall, it follows the narrator, Sir Charles Calcraft, as he hosts a circle of lively young cousins and relatives—Lady Camilla Dareall, Lavinia Dieaway, and Lord Walter Dieaway—whose wit, flirtation, and schemes expose the foibles of aristocratic life. Through brisk dialogue and social intrigue, the novel lampoons household management, ostentation, and the anxieties of duty within the English upper classes, even as it explores matters of love, loyalty, and personal integrity. A comic supernatural episode—the discovery of a buried treasure in Barham Wood and a ghostly visitation—serves as a catalyst for revelations about ancestry, money, and power. Across rooms and gardens, the characters navigate money-saving reforms, marriage possibilities, and the tension between public image and private feeling, creating a lively tapestry of satire, romance, and social manners.
