In the late 60s and early 70s, the author, an expert in the state geological survey, wanted to provide more information to city planners, county environmental officials, and community leaders about the nature of the ancient glacial deposits underlying their region. As the metropolitan areas of Chicago and northern Illinois continued to expand rapidly, deep sources of drinkable water were becoming overused. The author conducted a drilling program in Lee and Ogle Counties, collecting samples and data from a total of eight drill holes across those counties. This information could facilitate the search for new, shallow sources of groundwater. The author also ran seismic surveys and conducted a pumping test to further evaluate their findings. The book provides the collected data and presents the author’s interpretations of how it relates to the character, thickness, and depth of glacial deposits in the region. This information can be applied to land use planning, and the overall environmental goals of the region. In the Chicago region and in other areas of northern Illinois the deep sources of water, the artesian sandstones, are already overpumped. The purpose of a drilling program conducted in Lee and Ogle Counties by the Illinois State Geological Survey was to provide information on the nature of glacial de posits to facilitate the search for new, shallow sources of ground water for the rapidly expanding metropolitan areas of northeastern and north-central Illinois. Data compiled from field and laboratory analyses of samples collected from one test hole in Ogle County and seven drill holes, 16 refraction seismograph pro files, and one pump test in Lee County are presented here (fig. The test holes were drilled in conjunction with the construction of a test well and an aquifer - evaluation study by the Illinois State Water Survey.
