Data and Informatics Needs in Biomaterials (Classic Reprint)

The book examines how data and informatics are used to understand biomaterials.

It explains why biocompatibility and standardized measurement matter, and how open data can speed progress in implants and devices.

With a focus on both natural and engineered biomaterials, the work surveys how data about strength, wear, corrosion, and surface properties are collected, shared, and compared. It discusses the challenges of inconsistent testing methods and the rise of Internet-based data resources to support research, development, and regulatory needs.

• Key data needs in biomaterials, including how properties are measured and stored.
• The role of standards and standardization in making data comparable across studies.
• How the Web and databases enable broader access to biomaterials information.
• Stakeholders—from academia to industry and government—that shape data practices.

Ideal for researchers, engineers, and policy makers working at the intersection of materials science and biomedical applications.
