The Daughter in Room 17

Eleven years ago, Mara Vale buried her daughter.

At least, that is what she remembers.

Then the phone rings.

A woman from a psychiatric clinic tells Mara that a young patient has been admitted to Room 17. The patient is frightened, unstable, and refusing to speak to anyone.

Except Mara.

There is only one problem.

The patient claims to be her daughter.

Mara knows it cannot be true. She remembers the funeral. She remembers the coffin. She remembers learning how to survive the unbearable silence that followed.

But when she enters Room 17, the young woman waiting for her knows things no stranger should know.

A childhood phrase.

A forgotten hiding place.

A song Mara hasn't heard in eleven years.

And details about the night her daughter died that Mara has never told another living soul.

Determined to expose the woman as an impostor, Mara begins searching through the pieces of a past she thought she understood.

Instead, she discovers missing records, altered memories, old photographs that don't make sense, people who refuse to answer simple questions—and evidence suggesting that the story she has believed for eleven years may never have been true.

Soon, Mara is forced to confront a terrifying possibility:

What if the woman in Room 17 isn't lying?

And an even worse one:

What if Mara is?

As buried memories begin to surface and the people closest to her reveal secrets of their own, Mara realizes that discovering who survived that night is only the beginning.

Because someone has spent eleven years making sure she remembers the wrong daughter.

And they are not finished with her yet.

The Daughter in Room 17 is an emotional psychological thriller about grief, memory, motherhood, manipulation, and the devastating difference between what happened—and what we need to believe happened.
