David Hockney (born 1937 in Bradford) is one of the most influential and technically versatile artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. This new publication gathers some of his most defining work from the 1950s to the present, including major works in the Tate collection. From early graphic cycles, iconic pool paintings through to his plein air landscapes, iPad drawings, and multimedia installations, the volume documents central themes and genres in Hockney’s oeuvre, as well as his constant experimentation. Original essays by renowned critics and commentators illuminate the artist’s search for new forms of expression, the topographical and biographical reference points of his work, the technical innovation of his painting and printmaking, as well as his approach to new media.

About the Author

Veronika Rudorfer is curator at Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna. Jan Svenungsson is Professor at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. Helen Little is currently curator at Leeds Art Gallery. Previously, she was assistant curator of modern and contemporary British art at Tate Britain in London, where she specialized in British art since 1945 and implemented extensive exhibition projects on the subject. Gabriele Jutz is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She has published numerous books and articles, especially on the cinematic avant-garde, expanded cinema, film sound, art and the moving image, and experimental animation. Larissa Kikol is a freelance art critic and art scholar. Hans Ulrich Obrist is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries in London. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Mus�e d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show "World Soup (The Kitchen Show)" in 1991, he has curated more than 300 exhibitions. Ingried Brugger is the director of Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna. Bettina M. Busse is curator at Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna.
